Freestanding furniture can provide storage, a working surface, display space or a combination of uses. Its proportions and internal sections are planned around where it will stand and what it needs to hold.

How Do We Plan Furniture Around Your Room and Requirements?

We begin by discussing what the furniture needs to do and what will be stored inside it. The size and weight of its intended contents affect the depth, shelf spacing and support required.

We also consider its proposed position. Doors, windows, radiators, sockets, skirting boards and nearby furniture may affect the suitable width, height and depth. The piece does not need to fill every gap, but its proportions should work within the available area.

The access route is also important. Doorways, hallways, stairs and turns must provide enough clearance for the completed item or for sections designed to be assembled in the room.

Before construction, we agree on the dimensions, internal arrangement, materials, doors, drawers and finish with you.

What Can a Freestanding Storage Unit Include?

A freestanding storage unit can combine fixed or adjustable shelves, drawers, cupboards and open compartments. The layout is divided around what you need to store and how frequently you use it.

Drawers may suit smaller belongings, while cupboards can accommodate larger items. Open sections can hold books, baskets or display pieces. Different shelf heights and depths may be included within the same unit.

Equipment storage may require openings for power, data or other cables. Compartments for powered devices should also provide the access and ventilation stated by the manufacturer.

Tall or narrow furniture may need a wall restraint to reduce the risk of tipping. We consider the dimensions, weight distribution, floor, and intended use when discussing whether anti-tip fixings are required.

When Is Freestanding Furniture More Suitable Than Fitted Furniture?

Freestanding furniture may suit you when you want the option to reposition an item or take it with you when moving property. It can also work where the furniture should occupy only part of a wall rather than being fitted around every room feature.

A custom piece can still be sized for a particular position. This provides control over its width, height, depth and internal arrangement without making it a permanent part of the room.

Fitted furniture may be preferable when the aim is to use the complete width or height of a wall, follow an angled ceiling or fit closely inside an alcove. Our Custom Built Shelving Units are designed for this type of installation.

What Materials and Finishes Can You Choose?

We can discuss solid wood, painted MDF, veneered boards, and melamine-faced materials depending on the item and intended use. The exterior and interior can use the same material or different finishes.

Doors and drawer fronts can be plain, Shaker-style, or reeded where the construction allows. You can choose visible handles or discuss push-to-open fittings. Soft-close hinges and drawer runners may also be included.

Paint colours, timber surfaces and clear finishes are agreed before the furniture is made. We can coordinate the piece with existing room details, although variations in natural timber and aged finishes may remain visible.
