We measure the window area and record the position of the sill, handles, skirting boards, sockets, curtains, blinds and nearby furniture. The design should allow the window to open and keep existing fittings accessible.
A built in window seat may follow the angles of a bay, fit between two walls or occupy part of a wider wall. As walls and floors are not always even, the unit is planned from the actual measurements.
How Can a Window Seat Combine Seating, Storage and Shelving?
A custom made window seat can use the area beneath the seating surface for enclosed or open storage. The best opening method depends on the available floor space, unit depth, and how often its contents will be used.
Drawers require clear space in front, while hinged doors provide access to separate cupboards. A lift-up top can use the complete area below, although a cushion may need to be moved or attached so that the top can open.

Some windows have a radiator below them. The design must not restrict the airflow, controls, or maintenance access required by the heating system. Depending on its position, the seat may need ventilation openings or a different layout. Any radiator relocation or alteration should be completed by the appropriate qualified trade.
What Materials and Finishes Can You Choose?
We can discuss painted MDF, melamine-faced boards, and solid wood details depending on the design. A painted unit can use a colour chosen for the room, while a timber seat top can provide a natural wood surface.
Drawer and cupboard fronts can be plain or Shaker-style. You can choose handles or discuss push-to-open fittings where they suit the construction. Internal compartments can use the same finish as the exterior or a different material.
We consider the expected cushion thickness when setting the seat height and can size the carpentry around the agreed dimensions.
