What Can You Include in a Custom Built Bookcase?

Your bookcase can combine open shelving with cupboards, drawers, or display sections. We can vary the shelf heights for books, records, ornaments and framed pieces instead of dividing the entire unit into equal spaces.

Depending on your room and what you need to store, your design could include:

How Do We Design a Custom Built Bookcase Around Your Room?

We begin by discussing what you want to store and where you want the bookcase to sit. The sizes of your books, the items you want to display and the belongings you prefer to conceal all affect the layout.

We measure the available area and plan around features such as skirting boards, sockets, windows, doors, chimney breasts and sloping ceilings. Fitted bookcases can continue into corners, use the height above a doorway or frame a window without blocking access to the room.

For built-in bookcases, we also consider how the unit meets the surrounding walls, ceiling and floor. Before we begin making it, we agree the proportions, shelf spacing, cupboard layout, materials and finish with you.

What Can We Build Around a Fireplace or Alcove?

Recesses beside a chimney breast are useful positions for fireplace bookcases. You might choose lower cupboards with shelves above, full-height shelving or a different arrangement on each side.

The two alcoves do not have to be the same width. We measure them separately and can adjust the shelving while coordinating the doors and finish. The bookcases can leave the chimney breast visible while giving you storage across the rest of the wall.

A bookcase can also be made for a single recess elsewhere in your home. Depending on the space, it can include open shelves, cabinet doors, drawers, or a section for display pieces.

How Can You Combine a Bookcase with a Desk or Window Seat?

If you work from home, we can design a bookcase with a built-in desk so your books, files, and work surface form one installation. The desk can sit between shelving sections or continue from one side of the bookcase. We can also plan cupboards, drawers and cable access around how you use the workspace. What Materials and Finishes Can You Choose?

We can make your custom built bookcase from materials including MDF and solid wood. Painted MDF provides a smooth finish in a colour chosen for your room, while oak or another solid wood can introduce a natural timber surface.

Your shelves can be fixed or adjustable, and the arrangement can be regular or varied to suit different items. Where the design includes cupboards, we can coordinate plain or Shaker-style doors with the rest of the furniture.
