What Can You Include in a Custom-Made Alcove Unit?

You can combine open and closed storage within one alcove unit. Lower cupboards can keep household items out of sight, while shelving above gives you space for books, photographs and ornaments. We can also include drawers, adjustable shelves and separate storage sections.

Depending on your room, your alcove unit could include:

How Can Alcove Units Work in Different Rooms?

In your living room, alcove cupboards and shelving can provide space for books, ornaments, media equipment, and everyday items. You can combine closed base cabinets with open shelves so some belongings remain visible while others are concealed.

If you have an alcove in your bedroom, we can turn it into one of our Custom Wardrobes with hanging rails, shelves and drawers. Your wardrobe can be fitted into the recess or made as a freestanding piece, depending on your preference.

For your television and media equipment, an alcove TV unit can include cabinets, shelving and cable access. If you need storage across more of the wall, our Custom TV & Entertainment Units can combine your television area with display and enclosed storage.

We can also make alcove furniture for dining rooms, home offices, hallways and commercial interiors.

What Can We Build Around Your Chimney Breast?

If you have recesses on either side of a chimney breast, we can use them for cupboards, cabinets, or shelving. One common arrangement combines low chimney breast alcove cupboards with open or floating shelves above, leaving your fireplace and chimney breast visible.

The two sides do not need to have identical dimensions. We measure each alcove separately and adjust the width, height and internal layout accordingly. We can still coordinate the doors, shelves and finishes so both units work together.

You can also use these spaces for full-height cabinets, bookcases, drinks cabinets, display storage or a TV unit.

How Do We Design Your Alcove Unit?

We begin by discussing what you want to store and how you use the room. This helps us decide whether your unit should include open shelves, cupboards, drawers, hanging space or media storage.

We measure each recess individually because walls and chimney breasts may not be completely even. Before we cut any materials, we plan the proportions, internal layout, door design and finish with you.

We can also account for sockets, cables, lighting and access to existing features. This allows you to use your new storage without interfering with how the room already works.

What Materials and Finishes Can You Choose?

We make alcove furniture from materials including MDF and solid wood. You can choose painted MDF for a smooth, consistent finish or introduce oak and other solid-wood elements when you prefer a natural timber appearance.

Your doors can be plain, Shaker-style, reeded, or traditionally detailed. Depending on the design, we can fit handles, soft-close hardware or push-to-open mechanisms.

You can also choose features such as glass-fronted display cabinets, integrated LED lighting, floating shelves and open-backed shelving. We discuss these details with you so they suit the appearance and everyday use of your unit.
