Custom Solid Oak Living Room Cupboard in Shepherd's Bush, London
Back to projectsCustom Solid Oak Living Room Cupboard in Shepherd's Bush, London
For this living room project in Shepherd's Bush, London, we designed and built a tall solid-oak cupboard beside the fireplace. The client needed enclosed shelving, but the frontage also had to work as a distinct feature within the room. We constructed the outer frame, doors, internal lining and shelves from oak, sizing the cabinet for the available wall space.
Reeded Oak Doors on the Living Room Cupboard
The cupboard has eight individual reeded oak doors arranged across four storage levels. On one door, the reeding runs vertically, while the panel beside it turns the pattern horizontally. Reversing the direction on each pair creates the alternating front shown across the full height of the unit.
No handles interrupt the pattern because every door uses a push-to-open mechanism. Developing the alternating doors required the one-off approach used for our special carpentry projects, with every panel made for its position in the sequence.
Solid Oak Shelving inside the Living Room Cupboard
Behind the doors, three full-width oak shelves divide the cabinet into four storage sections. Each pair of doors opens independently, allowing one part of the cupboard to be accessed without exposing the others.
The shelves provide room for books, living room items and larger possessions, while the closed frontage keeps everything concealed when not in use. We planned the custom built in shelving to maintain usable depth throughout the cabinet, and the lowest section retains access to the existing electrical socket at the back.
