Custom Bay Window Desk and Alcove Shelving in Mortlake, London

For this home in Mortlake, London, we built a custom bay window desk with lower storage cupboards and a floor-to-ceiling alcove unit. Both pieces combine MDF construction with timber trim and textured green inset panels, providing a fitted workspace, open display shelving and enclosed storage.

Custom Bay Window Desk with Side Storage Cupboards

The desk follows the angled shape of the bay window recess, creating a wide, deep work surface. Integrated cable grommets provide routes for wires, while a central cutout leaves an opening above the radiator and ventilation area.

Two lower side cabinets provide enclosed storage beneath the desk. Their framed MDF doors have green textured inset panels. We made the desktop and carcass from MDF, with solid timber mouldings along the face frames and base skirting.

Custom Alcove Shelving with LED Lighting and Base Storage

The custom alcove bookcase combines a multi-compartment open bookshelf with a lower sideboard cabinet. A central opening provides space for a TV or monitor, with wall power outlets within the recess.

Warm LED strips run vertically and horizontally through the upper shelving, with channel diffusers providing accent illumination across the display sections.

The sideboard has two top pull-out drawers and four cupboard doors with brass knobs. MDF drawer fronts and door frames feature sage-green textured inset panels, continuing the decorative panel detail across the lower storage.

We built the carcass, shelves and backing boards from MDF, with softwood face framing, decorative crown moulding at the top and skirting trim at the base. The exposed MDF surfaces were left ready for priming and painting.
