Custom Shaker Wardrobes and Alcove Bookcase in Ditchling, near Hassocks

For this home in Ditchling, we built a four-door fitted wardrobe and two alcove units. The new MDF cabinetry combines hanging space, shelving and drawers with integrated LED lighting, providing enclosed clothing storage and an open bookcase.

Custom Four-Door Shaker Wardrobe with Eight Drawers

The floor-to-ceiling custom fitted wardrobe has four Shaker-style panel doors above eight base drawers. Four shallow upper drawers and four deeper lower drawers provide different storage depths within the same installation.

Inside, a wide hanging section sits alongside individual cubbies for shoes and smaller belongings. Overhead shelving adds storage above the hanging space, while vertical LED channels illuminate the interior.

We made the carcass, shelves, doors, and drawer fronts from MDF. Dark round knobs complement the framed fronts, and concealed hinges keep the door fittings inside the wardrobe. The cabinetry was sanded and prepared for priming and painting.

Custom Alcove Wardrobe and Illuminated Bookcase

On either side of a chimney breast, we fitted two custom alcove units beneath existing high-level cupboards. A double-door Shaker wardrobe occupies the left recess, with a tall open bookcase on the right.

The alcove wardrobe contains a front-to-back pull-out hanging rail, side cubby shelves and two internal base drawers. An overhead LED light illuminates the hanging section, combining several storage features within the recess.

The custom open bookcase has continuous vertical LED lighting recessed along its sides. Frosted diffusers soften the lighting across the shelves.

Both alcove units were installed in unfinished MDF, ready for painting. The surrounding walls and existing overhead cupboards retain their deep green painted finish.
