Custom Home Office, Library and Landing Bookcase in Hampstead Heath, London

For this home in Hampstead Heath, London, we built fitted office and library joinery alongside recessed landing storage. The project combines integrated desks, cupboards and drawers with open shelving and built-in workspace lighting.

Custom Home Office and Library Units with Integrated Desks

The floor-to-ceiling custom home office unit combines an integrated desk with lower cabinet storage, a central stack of drawers and multi-bay upper shelves. The extended desktop has a rounded outer corner on the right.

We used standard and moisture-resistant MR-MDF for the carcass, desk surface, dividers, and fixed shelving. Surface-mounted MDF mouldings provide shaker detailing on the lower cabinet doors, with flush drawer fronts and top face-framing.

Recessed low-voltage LED puck lights beneath the lower shelf illuminate the workspace. Concealed Euro-style hinges are fitted to the cupboard doors, with heavy-duty runners supporting the drawers.

The corner library and study unit combines tall, deep open bookcase bays with a return desk and shelving above. Its adjustable library shelving uses metal support pins fitted into pre-drilled 5mm holes in the machined MDF panels.

A thickened MDF desktop has a smooth, rounded outer edge and is supported by an MDF end gable. Integrated wiring cutouts provide routes for workspace cabling.

Custom Recessed Landing Bookcase with Closely Spaced Shelves

The two-bay landing bookcase is fully recessed into a wall niche at the top of the stairs. Closely spaced fixed shelves provide storage for books and media across the full height of the unit.

We used high-density MDF for the outer box, central divider, back panel, and fixed shelves. MDF scribe fillers follow the surrounding plastered walls and ceiling profile, fitting the joinery flush within the niche. The shelf joints are reinforced with wood adhesive and brad nails.
