Custom Alcove and Display Unit in Westerham, Kent

For this project in Westerham, our Carpenter West Kent team designed and built a large MDF unit combining open display shelving with closed storage. The upper section provides space for books, ornaments, and other items, while the deeper cupboards below keep everyday belongings behind doors. A detailed cornice runs across the top, giving the unit a defined finish and tying its three shelving sections together.

Open Shelving for the Westerham Alcove and Display Unit

The open upper section was built with thick fixed shelves and divided into compartments of different widths and heights. Lighting was included to make the shelves useful for display as well as storage. 

Because this part of the unit is shallower than the base cupboards, it does not project as far into the room and leaves a useful ledge along the front. The layout brings custom built in alcove units and custom built in shelving together across one wall, with each section sized for the room.

Shaker-Style Cupboards beneath the Westerham Display Unit

The lower section contains three cupboard bays, each with an internal shelf. Six Shaker-style doors conceal the storage, while soft-close hinges control the movement when they are shut. 

The deeper base provides space for larger items and supports the display shelving above. We planned the cabinet proportions, shelf arrangement, and cornice as one complete installation, creating a balanced mix of open and closed storage for the client.
