Custom Alcove Bookcases and Radiator Covers in Tunbridge Wells, Kent

For this living room in Tunbridge Wells, Kent, we built a pair of custom alcove bookcases flanking the central fireplace and wall-mounted TV. Each unit combines a wide open-shelf bookcase with a multi-door base credenza, decorative lattice radiator screening and traditional top cornice moulding.

Custom Alcove Bookcases with Traditional Cornice Moulding

Wide open shelving forms the upper section of each unit, providing space for books and display pieces. Traditional cornice moulding finishes the top of each bookcase, repeating the same detail across the pair.

We made the carcasses, shelves, countertop slabs and door frames from cabinet-grade standard MDF. Solid pine was used for the top cornice mouldings.

Custom Base Credenzas with Decorative Radiator Screening

Each bookcase sits above a multi-door base credenza fitted with decorative radiator screening. Pierced cross-lattice fretwork panels detail the cabinet fronts, continuing the traditional styling of the upper cornice. The doors are fitted with concealed European cup hinges.

All MDF and timber components were left bare and unfinished. We sanded the joinery ready for priming and topcoat painting, with the final finish intended to contrast against the room’s dark feature walls.
