Custom Under-Stairs Storage and Bedroom Alcove Units in Rickmansworth

For this home in Rickmansworth, we built custom under-stairs storage and a pair of built-in alcove units. The hallway installation combines coat storage with pull-out shelving, while the bedroom joinery provides display cubbies, drawers and a fitted wardrobe on either side of the original tiled fireplace.

Custom Under-Stairs Cupboards with Pull-Out Shoe Storage

We tailored the storage beneath the staircase stringer and balustrade, incorporating a full-height angled coat wardrobe with a chrome hanging rail. Adjacent larder-style pull-out units contain multi-tier shelves for shoes and other belongings, with heavy-duty ball-bearing runners providing smooth access.

The carcass and face frames are made from standard MDF, with moisture-resistant MDF used for the door and drawer fronts. Slim black edge pulls and concealed hinges complete the fittings.

Custom Bedroom Alcove Bookcase and Wardrobe

Both bedroom units run from floor to ceiling, forming a symmetrical arrangement around the fireplace. The left alcove contains six large open display cubbies above a six-drawer chest. Four shallow accessory drawers sit over two deep storage drawers.

In the right alcove, the custom fitted wardrobe combines overhead top-box cupboards with a central double-door hanging section. An open three-tier side bookshelf column and a small lower cupboard complete the layout.

We used cabinet-grade MDF for the carcasses, shelving and face framing, with moisture-resistant MDF for the door and drawer infill panels. Applied raised bead moulding and slim metallic bar pulls to detail the fronts.

Both installations were left in raw, unfinished MDF, prepared for priming and painting. The intended finishes would blend the under-stairs storage into the hallway and complement the bedroom’s plum walls.
