Custom Alcove Units, Wall Panelling and Radiator Cover in Gravesend, Kent

For this home in Gravesend, Kent, we created fitted alcove storage and decorative joinery for the living room, hallway and staircase. The project includes open bookshelves, a wooden fireplace surround, picture-frame wall moulding and a custom radiator cover.

Custom Alcove Cabinets, Shelving and Fireplace Surround

Our custom-made alcove units occupy the recesses on either side of the chimney breast. Each unit has a double-door lower cupboard with recessed panels, fine edge mouldings and round knobs. Projecting tops separate the enclosed cupboards from the open shelving above.

The deep bookshelves fit the alcove dimensions, with fluted uprights and moulded cornices carrying traditional details across both installations. The shelves provide space for books and display pieces, while the cupboards keep other belongings concealed.

A wooden mantel and decorative surround frame the central cast-iron fireplace. The moulded edges and fluted detailing coordinate with the neighbouring cabinetry, connecting the three sections across the wall.

Custom Wall Moulding and Hallway Radiator Cover

We installed timber picture-frame moulding beneath the white dado rails throughout the hallway and along the staircase walls. Rectangular frames suit the level wall sections, while angled frames follow the pitch of the stairs.

Mitred corners join the mouldings, with individual frames sized around doorways, corners and changes in wall width. The dado rails continue horizontally across the landings and rise along the staircase, forming the upper border of the decorative wall treatment.

We also built a floor-standing custom radiator cover for the entrance hallway. It has a solid timber top and fluted side columns framing a decorative lattice grille, with openings above and below the grille.
