Custom Corner Bench, Wardrobe and Illuminated Bookcase in Ditchling, near Hassocks

For this home in Ditchling, near Hassocks, we built an L-shaped corner bench with concealed storage and adjoining shoe shelving, together with a full-height bedroom wardrobe and illuminated bookcase. The project combines seating, clothing storage and display space with integrated access to AV equipment and lighting.

Custom Corner Bench with Lift-Up Storage and Shoe Shelving

The custom corner bench seat has hinged lift-up lids for access to the storage below. The main lid opens onto a media junction box with power sockets and Wi-Fi equipment, while cable pass-through grommets route the connections through the bench.

Half-height grooved MR-MDF wall panelling forms the backrests, topped with a capping rail. Applied MDF Shaker-style border trims define the front bench panels.

We used standard and moisture-resistant MDF for the bench carcass, internal dividers, lift-up lids and shoe cabinet shelving. An adjoining two-bay open shoe storage unit keeps footwear accessible beside the seating.

Custom Shaker Wardrobe and Seven-Tier Illuminated Bookcase

The bedroom installation combines a two-door fitted wardrobe with a deep illuminated bookcase. The wardrobe is framed flush to the surrounding walls, with MR-MDF Shaker-style doors, wooden pull knobs and concealed 35mm European-style hinges.

Inside, upper storage shelves sit above a central polished metal hanging rail. Angled internal shelving and two soft-close pull-out drawers add separate storage, with heavy-duty slides supporting the drawers. An integrated LED light bar beneath the hanging rail illuminates the wardrobe interior.

The bookcase has seven shelving tiers, lit by continuous vertical LED strips along the rear inner edges. Recessed aluminium channels with frosted diffusers house the low-voltage lighting, which connects to an internal driver.

We used 18mm moisture-resistant MDF for the internal partitions, drawer boxes and fixed bookcase shelving.
