Custom MDF Alcove Units in Barnes, London

For this home in Barnes, London, we built and fitted three custom MDF alcove units. Two combine lower cupboards with open shelving, while the third provides cupboard storage without upper shelves. Matching Shaker-style doors and simple shelf profiles give the installations a clean, modern appearance.

Fitted Alcove Cupboards with Open Shelving

The two taller alcove units sit on either side of an existing fireplace. Each was made to fit its alcove, with a two-door cupboard at the base and open shelves extending up the wall.

We built the open shelving from MDF, providing space for books and display pieces above the enclosed storage. Inside the cupboards, a shelf divides each interior into two storage levels. Plain cupboard tops and rectangular shelf openings carry the same detailing across both units, framing the fireplace without covering its existing features.

Separate Alcove Base Cupboard

The third unit is a low fitted cupboard beside another fireplace. It has two Shaker-style doors, an internal shelf and a plain MDF top, leaving the wall above open.

We used the same MDF construction and door detailing as the taller units, giving all three pieces a coordinated appearance. Each cupboard was custom-made to suit its position within the existing alcove.
