Traditional Custom Alcove Units in Chobham, Surrey

For this home in Chobham, near Woking, Surrey, we designed and built two large MDF alcove units to give a spacious living room a more welcoming feel. Positioned on either side of the existing fireplace, the units combine open shelving, enclosed cupboards and traditional decorative details.

Custom MDF Alcove Units with Cornices and Beaded Doors

Our custom-made alcove units were designed around the available wall space beside the fireplace. Each unit has open upper shelving above a bank of cupboards, providing space for books and display pieces alongside enclosed storage.

A projecting cornice finishes the top of each installation. The lower cupboards have Shaker-style doors with decorative beading, while internal shelves divide the storage behind them. Matching cornices and door details connect the two units, with the fireplace remaining central to the arrangement.

Illuminated Bar Recess and Decorative Wall Beading

The left-hand unit includes a taller bar recess with two integrated spotlights. Open shelves sit above and beside the recess, incorporating the illuminated area into the surrounding custom shelving.

We also fitted decorative wall beading above the existing fireplace. Three rectangular frames, with a wider central frame between two narrower ones, carry the traditional detailing across the middle of the wall. Together, the cabinetry and mouldings give the previously empty walls more character and add generous living room storage.
