Custom Alcove Cabinets, Floating Shelves and Wardrobe in Gypsy Hill, London

For this property in Gypsy Hill, London, we built two custom alcove units and a floor-to-ceiling wardrobe. The alcove joinery pairs low cabinets with open display shelving, while the wardrobe combines hanging rails, clothing shelves and internal drawers.

Custom Alcove Cabinets with Floating Shelves

The fireplace alcove unit has a low two-door cabinet with a fixed internal shelf and three thick box-section floating shelves above. We made the carcass, internal shelf, doors and floating shelves from moisture-resistant MR-MDF, adding applied Shaker moulding to the door fronts.

The cabinet framing sits flush against the alcove wall and hearth. Concealed fixings anchor the floating shelves into the masonry, while soft-close concealed 35mm Euro hinges support the cabinet doors.

The second alcove unit combines a low three-door credenza with three long floating shelves in a stepped arrangement against a terracotta-painted feature wall. Its handleless flat-panel MDF doors give the cabinet a simple, flush front.

We used MR-MDF for the outer cabinet frame, internal shelving, counter surface and floating shelves. Concealed steel rods secure the shelves to the rear wall structure, and soft-close hinges are fitted to the cupboard doors.

Custom Five-Door Shaker Wardrobe with Hanging Space and Drawers

The custom fitted wardrobe extends across the wall from floor to ceiling, with five full-length Shaker-style doors enclosing four storage bays. Double hanging rails in polished chrome, clothing shelves and internal drawer stacks provide storage for hanging garments and folded clothes.

We used standard 18mm MDF for the carcass, vertical dividers, shelves and drawer boxes. The 18mm MR-MDF doors have applied Shaker frame detailing, with top scribe panels fitted flush to the ceiling coving.

Heavy-duty soft-close slides support the drawers, while concealed 110° hinges allow the wardrobe doors to open wide for access.
